Most people have an idea of what a checking account can do for them. You can use it to make purchases and pay your bills. However, not all checking accounts are created equal. The same can be said for banks and credit unions. People may have an idea of what a traditional bank can do for them, but credit unions offer the same convenience and easy banking options, often with better benefits and rates.
There are definite benefits of opening up a Credit Union of Denver Rewards Checking Account. But what are the real differences between a credit union and a bank?
What’s the Difference Between a Bank and Credit Union?
As a credit union member, you’re actually a part-owner! Credit unions don’t have to answer to shareholders and their vested interests. As a result, you help decide the direction of the credit union with voting rights, alongside fellow members.
This keeps your interest in mind. Credit Union of Denver is a friendly, member-focused environment. We believe in “People Helping People” through personal relationships with our members. We care about helping our members and our community.
Why Open a Rewards Checking Account with C•U•D?
We have been a financial staple of Colorado since 1931 – we are actually the oldest credit union in Colorado! By becoming a member, you help support your community. For example, we make donations to Foothills Animal Shelter in Golden, Colorado through the sales of our annual Pet Calendar. We are also the proud sponsor of Toby’s Pet Parade; and have been since its inception.
A traditional bank is more focused on making money than creating long term relationships. They have more account fees and requirements to provide them a source of income. A credit union is a not-for-profit, and we are against charging our members unnecessary and unfair fees. If you have ever been charged a monthly fee on your checking account, you need to make the switch! Our Rewards Checking accounts are free to open and have no minimum balance requirements. Why pay to use your money?
Our checking accounts really do offer benefits that make your life easier.

How to Get Started
Existing members, select button below based on existing account ownership. If you would like to open a checking account with different ownership, please choose the New Member button above, which will prompt you to also open a multiple share account. If you have more than two owners, contact the credit union at 303.239.1150 or 800.279.3288.
Convenient, Local, and Nationwide
Although we are engrained in the local Colorado community, we also have nationwide convenience for our members. We are part of the CO-OP Shared Branching Network, which means you are part of one of the largest banking networks in the United States. You have access to more than 5,600 branches, and over 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide.
This credit union benefit allows you the ability to use in-network ATMs and branch services outside of their local credit union. If you aren’t in the neighborhood of one of our branches, don’t sweat it, you can go to a participating credit union branch in the network and bank just as you normally would at our credit union, free of charge.
You can even download the free CO-OP ATM/Shared Branch Locator app or just text your zip code to 91989. Please keep in mind that while this service is free of charge, standard data/SMS fees may apply from your Mobile Carrier.
As Mobile as you are
Mobile Banking is a necessity. Luckily, Credit union of Denver’s free mobile app allows you to view your account balances, transfer funds between C•U•D accounts, pay bills, apply for loans, set-up Card Alerts, find free ATMs and Shared Branches near you, and even view our Credit Score & More platform. Whew, that’s a lot of finger tapping options!
Personal Customer Service
When you become a credit union member, you’re a member for life. We don’t take this for granted. We work hard to gain your trust and provide a financial relationship with you for years to come.
Credit Union of Denver is committed to being a leader in:
- Providing quality financial service
- Exceeding members’ expectations
- Achieving a loyal relationship with members and staff
Feel Protected – Security
You may have heard of the FDIC (which ensures all deposits up to $250,000) at a traditional bank. Credit Unions also have a similar type of protection. We belong to the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Similarly, any deposit made into a checking account becomes insured for up to the same amount of $250,000. Your money is safe and secure. Much more secure than under your mattress.
