What started as a small group built on trust and shared values has grown into a thriving community of more than 70,000 members. And through it all, one thing has never changed — our commitment to putting people first.
Every great story starts with people coming together for something bigger than themselves — and ours began on August 11, 1931 in Denver, Colorado. Eight employees from the National Federation of Federal Employees saw a need for a financial institution that put people first, so they joined forces and created what would become the oldest operating credit union in Colorado.
What started as a small cooperative built on trust, community, and shared values has grown into something truly special — and we're honored you’re here to explore it.
How We Grew Into Who We Are
1930s — A Cooperative Is Born
A group of dedicated federal employees submitted a Certificate of Organization to form Denver Credit Union. Their goal was simple: create a fair financial partnership rooted in accessibility and community to provide fair, accessible financial services for their fellow employees and families.
1940s — Moving With Our Members
As many federal employees transitioned to the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood, we moved right along with them so we could stay close, convenient, and committed to the people we served.
1950s — A New Name for a Growing Community
We became the Denver Interior Employees Credit Union (DIECU), better reflecting the members who trusted us with their financial lives.
1982 — A New Home Base
We opened our branch at 9305 West Alameda Avenue, which remains our main branch today.
1987 — Credit Union of Denver Is Born
With our field of membership expanding across the greater metro area, it was time for a name that represented everyone we served. That’s when we officially became Credit Union of Denver.
2016 — Credit Union of Denver celebrated their 85th Anniversary
In 2016, we celebrated our 85th Anniversary with a big member appreciation party in the street! This was the start of an annual celebration to thank our members for their commitment to our collective success. We distributed $1.5 million dollars back to our members with a profit-sharing deposit.
2021 — Credit Union of Denver hits a milestone
In 2021, what began with just eight members had now grown to serve over 65,000 people, with more than $1 billion in assets. We celebrated a milestone that allowed us to look back with gratitude and forward with excitement.
But no matter how much we’ve grown, one thing has always stayed the same: our deep appreciation for the members who make this credit union what it is.
