Technology is advancing fast and so are scams. With artificial intelligence (AI) becoming more sophisticated, fraudsters are now using it to create convincing phishing messages, fake voices, and even deepfake videos to trick people into handing over personal and financial information. As your trusted credit union, we have put together a list of tips to help you stay informed and secure.
1. Be Skeptical of “Too Real” Messages
AI can generate emails, texts, and phone calls that sound or look like they’re from a family member, your employer, or even companies. If something feels off, like urgent requests for money or personal info, pause and verify through a trusted channel.
2. Don’t Trust Caller ID Alone
Voice cloning technology can make it sound like a loved one is calling in distress. Scammers may also spoof legitimate phone numbers. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call the person or institution directly using a verified number, don’t just redial.
3. Be Cautious of Links and Attachments
AI-generated phishing emails can appear professional and free of typos. Before you click, hover over links with your mouse to see where they lead. But best practice is to not click any links and just search the site yourself. Avoid downloading attachments or images, even if they appear to come from someone you know.
4. Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Always create unique passwords for all your accounts and add MFA when you can, to reduce the risk of unauthorized access. This way if your password becomes compromised, MFA adds that extra layer of security by requiring a one-time passcode.
5. Don’t Overshare Online
Scammers can use AI to piece together personal information from social media. Avoid posting details like your birthday, pet names, or travel plans, which could help scammers guess your security questions or passwords.
6. Keep Software Updated
Update your phone, computer, and apps regularly. Security patches often protect against vulnerabilities AI-powered scams can exploit.
