There has recently been an increase in reports of spoofing attempts. While this can feel concerning, the good news is that knowing what to look for can help you stay one step ahead.
What Is Spoofing?
Spoofing is when a scammer disguises their phone number, email, or text message to make it appear as though it’s coming from a trusted source, like your credit union. With the numbers looking familiar, these scams can be especially convincing.
What This Might Look Like
You could receive:
- A phone call that appears to come from the official number
- A text message that looks like it’s from a team member
- A message claiming there’s an urgent issue with your account
- These messages are designed to create urgency, so that you act quickly without thinking.
What to Watch Out For
Even if it looks like it’s legit, be cautious if you notice:
- Requests for sensitive information like passwords, PINs, or full account numbers
- Urgent or alarming language pushing you to act immediately
- Links asking you to log in or verify information
- Requests to send money or confirm transactions you didn’t initiate
What We Will Never Do
To help you feel confident spotting scams, here’s what we won’t do:
- We will never call or text asking for your passwords, PINs, or secure codes
- We will never ask you to move or send money to resolve an issue
- We will never pressure you to act without giving you time to verify
How to Protect Yourself
If you receive a suspicious call or message:
- Take a moment and don’t rush to respond
- Do not click links or share personal information
- Hang up and contact us directly, using a trusted number
- Report the interaction so we can continue protecting our members
